TV Pops & turns off

I have a ProScan TV, Model PS27151 that was purchased in 1992. It has recently started to make a pop sound & the TV turns off. Sometimes it stays off & I cannot turn it back on with the remote. Sometimes I can turn it on at the TV but other times only unplugging & plugging it back in will turn it on. The first time this happened, about 2 weeks ago, unplugging it fixed the problem for over 1 week but then it happened again. Today, after it turned off, it immediately turned on again for a few minutes then off again, on again several times. The final pop off was followed by a second pop &

There are no tubes; generally the pop happens because of high voltage. It is being shorted out and the pop is either the flyback transformer or the horizontal transistor oscillator. these two are reponsible for creating the high voltage cycle for your television; when either of them or their circuitry is shorted out you hear that "pop" which is the emergency cut off circuitry coming into play to protect the rest of the television.
