Did you make sure that your remote was in the right mode? Most remotes these days are multi function and can be preogrammed to operate some DVD players, VCRs, etc. I know some models of the sharp remotes have a small function button at the top near the light panel (the lights that flicker when you press a button). If you toggle the function button the remote will change function settings and you should know by the different lights that illuminate under TV, cable etc. Maybe someone pressed that button by accident. Try the different functions to see if you can change channels again.
Sometimes, if certain remote control keys are used over and over again the rubber on the bottom of the buttons wears off onto the inside contacts, breaking the electrical connection. This is common on power and channel keys, especially. If you can get the remote opened up, you can clean the contacts with a cloth and it might help. Otherwise, it may be worth buying a universal remote.
